Spring is finally here hooray! It’s been a minute since I dropped something new. It finally got sunny enough in NY to do my first photo shoot. I’ve been in love with street tags since the early 90’s. The hand styles of graffiti writers is an art form all in itself just like calligraphy, and typography. Once you have your own knack for it, it’s on!!!
I got my sister to lead the photo shoot series this year, and bring her unique eclectic style into the mix. Joanne Marie Mena now 20, recently moved back from Florida to carve out a new life in NY. The youngest, and most difficult of the three Joanne is quick to back talk, make you laugh with her crusty remarks, and show you that no mater how tough you think you are outside, you’re just a big pile of mush inside. Sometimes I wish she would just chill on all her piercings, and hundreds of hair color transformations, but she will always say and do whatever she wants. Her rebellious creative spirit doesn’t let her compromise for anybody. A true trait from our family:) Love you fea!

A few weeks back my hommie Rokafella had a small intimate film screening of her documentary project called ALL THE LADIES SAY. I was very excited to see it because I KNOW this film is going to make a huge difference in many young women’s lives, especially young women in hip hop who want to break! Rokafella was one of the first b-girls I ever met in NY. When I saw her break, teach, mentor, write, sing, and SPEAK I was blown away. Being able to identify with someone from your own world, who goes through similar shit helps you connect like nothing else. She’s been my SHERO ever since. Her transformation shows an immense growth in being, so I am very happy she’s moving into film making. It’s time to take control over our images, and complex stories. BIG UPS to ladies in the film who are staying true to theirs and helping to share a positive image of women in hip hop.Check out the trailer it’s now officially UP!ÂÂ
Handstyles by yours truly;)
ALL THE LADIES SAY is a film that highlights the lives of six iconic female street dancers from San Jose, Atlanta, Miami and Chicago, who have carved a niche in the physically challenging, male dominated breakdance world. Discussions about motherhood, sexual tension, femininity versus masculinity and the rap industry/mainstream images are a few of the themes explored by the main characters.
