Art Basel Miami: From December 1 through 4, Miami Beach, Florida, will host the 10th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, the most prestigious art show in the Americas. More than 260 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa will take part, showcasing works by more than 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Fountain Art Fairis an exhibition of avant garde artwork in New York during Armory week, Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach and Los Angeles during Pacific Standard Time weekend.

Mighty Tanaka is an organization committed to serving the arts and artists in New York City and beyond through a dedicated curatorial effort. We are devoted to the advancement of breakthrough art forms that express our generation’s voice and steadfastness. Through our presentation of highly skilled curatorial services and projection of artists that demonstrate the range and breadth of our upstart generation, we strive to create an integral foundation for both upcoming and established artists alike. Mighty Tanaka is driven by urban inspiration and is constantly clearing the way for this growing artistic renaissance to expand beyond the gallery walls and into our personal lives.

TOOFLY GRAFFITI WORKSHOP

In this workshop the participants chose some words out of a box and re-created them in various graffiti styles from bubble lettering, straight lettering, and wildstyle. Some of the words chosen were END, WRITE, and UTE. I forgot what Ute meant in Swedish…

Youth get a chance to learn the art of lettering, graphic design, and color…

TOOFLY YOUNITY WORKSHOP

My favorite workshop was the Younity workshop with an all female group. I decided we would create a design that represents women, and empowering women messages that can be used as a wall piece, a flyer, or a poster. I enjoyed this workshop very much, and will continue to develop it. It was really beautiful to see what the women came up with, and the effort they put in their message.

As my trip came to and end I had one more chance to try and get a wall to paint in a city where there is 0 graffiti tolerance. I was super siked when Jacob hooked it up. Public walls are super hard to come by, Only but a few artists in Stockholm have secret locations where they get a chance to freely express themselves out in the open. There was a bunch of calls that had to be made to make it happen, and luckily Jacobs friend Erse had just the spot! I was ready for the mission and early Sunday morning I met up with Erse, who turned out to be hella cool guy. He hooked me up with some paint and lead the way to the wall. I had only 1 hour to make it happen before one of my workshops started. This was a total speedy gonzalez move! THANK YOU ERSE!!!

COMnGRAF 3: Breaking Borders is Art that showcases Hip-Hop culture through the cross-cultural influence between Comic Book Art and Graffiti Art. This exhibition will showcase the collaborative grouping of both sequential and aerosol art by mainstream comic book artists and legendary graffiti artists. Simply stated, it is “the fusion of two cultures” celebrating the influence each has on the other. In 2011, the King Arts Complex is excited to bring COMnGRAF 3 to the audience in Central Ohio.

AFRO PUNK FESTIVAL

Space is transformed into a pop-up skate park: Skaters, Half Pipes, Decks, Live Music, etc. DON’T MISS IT!!!

From 4 th -6 th July , it’s the turn of bands, skaters and BMX take over downtown Brooklyn. Check the event page for a full line-up plus more details on the Nike SB skate clinic and the $5000 worth of prizes on offer through two URBANX Battle For The Streets skate/BMX competitions. The festival closes out with a Block Party on July 12 th featuring more live music, djs, fashion, food and local artists.

The festival is the center of the global Afro-punk community and the definitive destination for audiences looking to experience true Afro-punk culture. Last year 30,000 people attended, and this year even more are expected, along with 40 bands, 24 films, a visual art exhibit and a custom built skate park where you can check out pro riders and skaters from around the country.

ABOUT

When Matthew Morgan and James Spooner joined forces in 2002, their focus was giving a voice to thousands of multi-cultural kids fiercely identifying with a lifestyle path-less-traveled. Morgan, a visionary with 15 years in the music industry, instinctively understood that the indie rock/punk/hardcore scene had powerful appeal beyond the predictable Caucasian audience; the passion evident in writer-director Spooners hours of riveting hand-shot footage was the indisputable proof. The result: 2003s Afro-Punk, the seminal cult classic film spotlighting Black Punks in America.

Afro-Punk became a touchstone of a cultural movement strongly reminiscent of the early days of Hip-Hop. Alternative urban kids across the nation (and across the globe) who felt like outsiders discovered they were actually the core of a boldly innovative, fast-growing community. The online members have been the driving force behind the exploding Afro-Punk (AP) culture, creating an authentic virtual home in www.afropunk.com, and nurturing the musics best and brightest via expansion of the Liberation Sessions, a live performance series hosted by Spooner.

As the AP movement continued to gain momentum and influence, everyone began to notice. The Liberation Sessions went front-and-center at CMJ and SXSW, press coverage ranged from Pitchfork, URB, Vibe, and Nylon to The New York Times, Variety, Entertainment Weekly, and The Los Angeles Times.

In 2005, the very first annual Afro-Punk Festival debuted to wildly enthusiastic crowds at the iconic Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Co-curated by Morgan and Spooner, the festival celebrated and unified the cultural cornerstones of Afro-Punk: music, film, skate, and most importantly, the fiercely independent and influential individuals that are the lifeblood of the AP community.
